Year 2
Note: Year 2 is currently in development, and only Terms 1, 2 and 3 are available for purchase at this time.
A brief introduction to your program.
Aussie Readers Year 2 continues the exciting literacy journey that began in Kindergarten and Year 1, helping your child master even more advanced reading and writing skills. This course dives deeper into phonetic codes, including more complex sounds like "kn," "bu," and "ough." By this stage, there are very few tricky words left, as your child will have already learned many graphemes and phonemes that cover the majority of English sounds.
Year 2 places a greater emphasis on spelling rules and the powerful role of morphemes in building words and understanding meaning. Your child will expand their grammar knowledge and start applying these skills to become a confident and creative writer. Handwriting formation practice continues to be a focus on Mondays, ensuring that writing skills are developing alongside literacy growth.
Fun Friday storybook lessons look a little different in Year 2. Your child will have more flexibility to choose texts that match their interests, all while considering the purpose of the text. These lessons continue to strengthen comprehension and vocabulary, encouraging a love for reading while enhancing critical literacy skills.
Term 1 kicks off with an exciting introduction to figurative language, exploring text features in poetry, song lyrics, and recounts. Term 2 explores the fascinating world of narratives. Children will study two different narrative structures and engage with imaginative text features, including dialogue, writing in both first and third person, and focusing on the tense of each text. In Term 3, students explore informative texts with a focus on procedural and report genres. They engage with key language features, including writing factual commands and statements, using subject-specific vocabulary, and composing texts from second- and third-person perspectives in the present tense. With engaging video lessons that model new concepts, your child will be guided through each step of the learning process. After clear instructions, your child will practise these new skills with support and feedback, before confidently moving on to independent work.
Let your child enjoy this next phase of their literacy development with Aussie Readers Year 2, where learning becomes both fun and rewarding!

Why Choose Aussie Readers?
I am a qualified K-6 teacher, and have implemented this approach to teaching reading in the classroom over nine years. This has given me time to analyse what works well and to create a highly effective series of learning experiences. I know this approach works because the majority of the students I have taught have ended the year ‘Well Above’ expected outcomes. How was this measured? I used the internationally recognised reading assessment, DIBELS. You can find out more about this assessment here: https://dibels.uoregon.edu/dibels8
